. Open a video

ImageGrab  needs no installation. When you launch it, ImageGrab, displays its main window, empty because no video has been loaded.

To open a video file, use the first button Open a video file, or type CTRL+F. By default, ImageGrab proposes to open files with extension avi, mpg, wmv, asf. You may try other multimedia extensions. The files will be recognized by ImageGrab if the relevant directshow filters have been installed on your system and if they are suited to ImageGrab.

The video will be loaded in imageGrab and activate eventually the navigation keys below the video. The size of the loaded video is displayed above the video window. It indicates also the size of the next grabbed picture, according to the key you press, between native (F2), 4x3 (F3) or 16x9 (F4). Here I have pressed F3 to get a picture of size 720x540. If I had kept the genuine format of 720x576, the head of the late Rostropovitch would have looked even taller.

In some cases, depending on the decoder filter found on your system, the picture will be inverted (head down). In that case, click on the button Flip Vertical (F11) to reverse the picture.

. Extract images

When a video is loaded in ImageGrab, choose the folder where the pictures will be saved, by clicking on the button or typing CTRL+S. The folder will be displayed in the bottom panel.

By default, the pictures are named with the 8 first characters of the name of the loaded video file, and by adding a four digits number, incremented at each new picture saved. You may set precisely how the picture names will be built up, by changing some settings in the Settings panel (F10).

Navigate then in the video, until you reach the frame to be grabbed. You can use the navigation buttons and the trackbar located below the video window. Generally, you can navigate with frame precision. It is also convenient to use the keys CTRL+arrow keyboard. You may also enter directly a timecode position above the video, and type Enter to reach directly the position.

The Space Bar operates Play or Pause on the video. You may mute the sound of the video on and off by checking the relevant box (or typing CTRL+M), and you may deinterlace the grabbed images by checking Deinterlace (or type CTRL+D). The sound volume is indicated by a small gauge. You may increase or reduce the sound volume by typing +or - at the numeric keyboard, or typing ALT+P or ALT+M at the main keyboard.

.

When the desired picture is displayed in the video, use the buttons of the second group to extract the picture

or F12: Grabs a picture and saves it to the indicated folder.

or F5: Takes a snapshot without saving it to the disk.

or F7: Saves the previous snapshot to the disk.

or CTRL+C: Copies the snapshot to the clipboard.

The snapshots will always be displayed in the small picture at the left or the video window. It is important to understand that you can either just take a snapshot without saving it, or take the snapshot and save it to the disk. The color of the picture name, below the little picture, becomes green when the file has been saved, and remains uncolored if the picture has not been saved.

Some other mouse clicks are precious to know:

A left click on the video takes a snapshot of the current frame without saving it. A left click with Shift takes a snapshot and saves it on the disk.
